"It's true, I can play!" - (July 1st, 2017)

I was born in a family of musicians, 4 generations of musicians: my great-grandmother, my grandfather and my father, all graduated in piano. My grandfather, born in 1907, also completed the composition and conducting studies at the "Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella" in Naples, Italy.

As a child, I was very insecure, timid, unable to start and keep a conversation, to intervene even when I had the right answer, feeling constantly embarrazed with anyone, with the girlfriends you have no idea, always with no valid arguments.

At school.

On the road.

At home.

Guitar was still the most played instrument at home: my father, Wissia, the oldest sister and my older brothers, Kiko and Simone, played the guitar while singing, not professionally. I was the only one who had never tried to play. Maura, the youngest, was still too young.

When I was about 5 years old, I told Simone, 6 years old, nowadays a brilliant pianist, that I would have liked to learn how to play the guitar. "You can't" he said with no particular tone in his voice, "you are left-handed." Although I was sorry, I did not even think about trying, I gave up directly, as if they had told me "I'm sorry, there are no candies anymore.

A few moments later, my father asked me: "Flavio, why all your brothers learned how to play the guitar and you never asked me?" And my answer was, "I can't play because I'm left-handed!" "Who told you this foolishness?" he added, asking me to go and pick up the guitar right away.

On the 4th floor of this building there is the apartment where I was born and where I lived until I was 9 years old. Outside it has not changed that much. At the far right you probably see a red lowered damper: it is the room where I was taught the first chords on the guitar.

I will never forget that day: embracing the guitar was not just love at first sight, it was also the beginning of all my torments and of the psychological war that is still in progress.

"IT'S TRUE - I told him, excited, almost screaming - I CAN PLAY!!!

"Finally, I can show you who I am." - I would have told him, that same afternoon of a warm month.

That happend in 1990. I was 7 years old.
