"But that’s only a tiny part of the story. There’s also Les Paul – “because my parents had his records with Mary Ford – I loved them and do to this day. He was an enormous influence.” In jazz, Wes Montgomery: “I was 16 when I saw Wes at Ronnie Scott’s. I had a lot of his records. Seeing him live was phenomenal, I’ll never forget it. The whole evening was wonderful.” First guitarist I heard in that style was Barney Kessel. I like the Poll Winners albums with Shelly Manne.” Kenny Burrell – “hearing the sound of Kenny Burrell when I was young was very powerful.” But before all these jazz players came Charlie Christian – “ I realised from buying Downbeat, there were polls full of guitarists who’d been influenced by his stuff, this was ten years later or more. He also gives “a lot of credit to Jimmy Bryant – he played with Speedy West as a duo. He’s on a lot of Tennessee Ernie Ford records, very hillbilly style, records like “Blackberry Boogie,” the guitar breaks were literally mind-bending.” The list doesn’t end there, and takes in talents as varied as Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse, UK jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, and Italian newcomer Flavio Sala." - read more here
